Trauma & PTSD
Trauma and PTSD are held in the body as well as the mind. Holistic practitioners bring somatic, nutritional, and nervous system approaches that address how overwhelming experience reshapes the body, and support the restoration of safety, presence, and resilience.
Trauma is not what happened to you, it is what happens inside you as a result of what happened. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma represent nervous systems that have been reorganized by overwhelming experience, resulting in hypervigilance, intrusive memories, emotional dysregulation, dissociation, and a persistent sense of threat even in safe environments. These are not character weaknesses or failures of will, they are biological adaptations of a nervous system trying to protect the person who endured something too much to process in the moment.
Holistic practitioners approach trauma with an understanding that it is held in the body as well as the mind. Somatic therapies, including Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, trauma-sensitive yoga, and bodywork approaches designed to work with the nervous system's stored activation, address the physiological dimension of trauma that talking alone cannot reach. The body's threat response patterns, held in the muscles, fascia, autonomic nervous system, and HPA axis, require body-based interventions to genuinely shift.
Nutrition and gut health also play a significant role in trauma recovery. Chronic stress and trauma exposure produce physiological changes, gut dysbiosis, elevated inflammation, neurotransmitter depletion, and HPA axis dysregulation, that holistic practitioners address alongside the somatic and psychological work. The goal of holistic trauma care is not to erase what happened but to restore the nervous system's capacity for safety, connection, and full presence, to help the body understand, at a physiological level, that the danger has passed.
