    Senior & Elder Health

Aging is malleable. Holistic practitioners help older adults optimize nutrition, preserve muscle and cognitive function, manage inflammation, and maintain the vitality and independence that make the later years worth living.

Aging is a biological reality, but the rate at which the body ages, and the degree to which aging means decline, is far more malleable than most people have been led to believe. The growing field of longevity medicine demonstrates that lifestyle inputs powerfully influence the biological hallmarks of aging: inflammation, mitochondrial function, cellular senescence, hormonal decline, and telomere length. Holistic practitioners who work with senior health focus on optimizing these inputs to support vitality, independence, and quality of life well into the later decades.

Nutritional needs shift with age in important ways. Protein requirements increase as muscle mass preservation becomes more difficult, sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle, is both preventable and partially reversible with adequate protein and resistance exercise. Vitamin B12 absorption decreases with age as gastric acid production declines, making deficiency common and consequential for cognitive and neurological health. Vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants all play critical roles in supporting the immune system, bone density, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function in older adults.

Prevention of falls, maintenance of cognitive function, management of polypharmacy effects, and support for the emotional dimensions of aging, including grief, purpose, and connection, are all areas where holistic practitioners add significant value. The goal of holistic elder care is not simply to add years to life but to add life to years, helping individuals remain active, engaged, and autonomous for as long as possible.
