    PCOS

PCOS is driven by insulin resistance, inflammation, and hormonal disruption, all of which respond meaningfully to holistic care. Practitioners work to address these roots and restore the cycle regularity, hormonal balance, and fertility that PCOS has disrupted.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, yet it remains widely misunderstood and undertreated. The name is somewhat misleading, PCOS is not primarily a condition of the ovaries but of the endocrine and metabolic systems. Its defining features, elevated androgens, irregular ovulation, and the characteristic cysts on ovarian ultrasound, are downstream effects of the true drivers: insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, and hypothalamic-pituitary signaling disruption.

Insulin resistance is present in the majority of women with PCOS, even those who are not overweight. Elevated insulin stimulates the ovaries to produce excess androgens, suppresses sex hormone-binding globulin, and disrupts the signaling that would otherwise trigger regular ovulation. Dietary approaches that improve insulin sensitivity, including lower glycemic eating patterns, adequate protein, and strategic meal timing, directly address this core driver and often produce significant improvements in cycle regularity, androgen levels, and symptoms including acne, hair growth, and hair loss.

Holistic practitioners approach PCOS as a condition with highly individual presentations requiring personalized investigation. For some women, adrenal androgens are the primary issue; for others, it is insulin and inflammation. Thyroid function, gut health, stress, and sleep all influence the PCOS picture. A comprehensive assessment, followed by targeted dietary, lifestyle, and supplemental interventions, often produces outcomes, including restored ovulation and fertility, that surprise women who have been told their only options are medication or hormonal contraceptives.
