    Lyme Disease

Lyme disease, particularly in its chronic form, requires a comprehensive approach that addresses immune function, co-infections, inflammation, and gut health. Holistic practitioners bring this whole-person perspective to a condition that often falls through conventional cracks.

Lyme disease, caused by the spirochete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted through tick bites, has become one of the most contested and complex conditions in contemporary medicine. Acute Lyme, when caught early and treated promptly, often responds well to antibiotics. But a significant proportion of individuals, particularly those who go undiagnosed, who have co-infections, or who have immune system challenges, develop persistent symptoms long after standard treatment ends. This condition, variously called Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome or chronic Lyme, includes fatigue, cognitive difficulties, joint pain, neurological symptoms, and a profound reduction in quality of life.

Holistic practitioners approach Lyme disease by supporting the body's immune function, addressing co-infections (including Bartonella, Babesia, and Ehrlichia, which commonly accompany Borrelia), reducing inflammation, supporting detoxification, and rebuilding the gut microbiome often damaged by extensive antibiotic use. Herbal antimicrobials including Japanese knotweed, cat's claw, and cryptolepis are used by many practitioners with experience in Lyme to address microbial burden while supporting rather than suppressing immune function.

The psychological and social dimensions of chronic Lyme are also significant. Many individuals with this condition face disbelief from healthcare providers, loss of function, and the grief of an identity disrupted by illness. Holistic practitioners bring a whole-person perspective that honors these experiences while working systematically to reduce the physical burden. Recovery from chronic Lyme is often slow and nonlinear, but meaningful improvement is consistently reported by those who receive comprehensive, knowledgeable care.
