Food Intolerances
Food intolerances develop in a gut that is struggling, with permeability, dysbiosis, or enzyme deficiency. Holistic practitioners work to identify triggers, heal the gut environment, and restore the digestive resilience that reduces reactivity.
Food intolerances are distinct from food allergies, they do not involve the IgE-mediated immune response that triggers anaphylaxis, but they produce very real and often debilitating symptoms: bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, skin reactions, headaches, fatigue, and brain fog that can significantly impair daily function. Common intolerances include lactose, gluten (in non-celiac gluten sensitivity), histamine, FODMAPs, salicylates, and various food additives. Identifying which foods are problematic, and why the body is reacting to them, requires careful investigation.
The gut is the primary site where food intolerances develop and where they can be addressed. Intestinal permeability, dysbiosis, enzyme deficiencies, and impaired digestive secretion all create conditions where incompletely digested food components trigger an immune or inflammatory response. Holistic practitioners approach food intolerances not just as a matter of identification and avoidance but as an opportunity to understand and repair the gut environment that is producing the reactivity.
Elimination and reintroduction protocols, guided by a knowledgeable practitioner, are the most reliable way to identify food intolerances and avoid unnecessarily restrictive long-term diets. Once problematic foods are identified, gut healing, through dietary adjustments, probiotic and prebiotic support, and targeted supplementation, can sometimes restore tolerance to foods that were previously reactive. Holistic practitioners help individuals navigate this process in a way that is systematic, sustainable, and genuinely informative.
