    Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia involves a sensitized nervous system, disrupted sleep, and often gut dysfunction. Holistic practitioners work to quiet the pain amplification at its source and restore the whole-body conditions that allow recovery.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disruption, and often cognitive difficulties, a constellation sometimes called "fibro fog." It is a condition of central sensitization: the nervous system's pain processing has become amplified, responding to stimuli that would not cause pain in others. Understanding fibromyalgia through this lens helps explain why conventional pain management often falls short and why holistic approaches that address nervous system regulation can be transformative.

Sleep is both a symptom and a driver of fibromyalgia. The restorative deep sleep stages, during which the body repairs and the nervous system consolidates, are disrupted in fibromyalgia, creating a feedback loop where pain disrupts sleep and poor sleep intensifies pain. Holistic practitioners prioritize sleep quality as a foundational intervention, often alongside gut health, since gut dysbiosis and intestinal permeability are consistently found in fibromyalgia patients and contribute to the inflammatory and pain-sensitizing environment.

Gentle movement, body-based therapies such as massage and myofascial release, and nervous system regulation practices such as yoga nidra and somatic experiencing are well-supported holistic approaches. Nutritional strategies that reduce inflammation, support neurotransmitter balance, and address common deficiencies such as magnesium and vitamin D provide additional leverage. The pacing strategy used in chronic fatigue syndrome, working within current capacity while gradually building resilience, applies equally to fibromyalgia management.
