    Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex conditions with physical, emotional, and relational roots. Holistic practitioners bring a whole-person perspective, honoring the individual's experience while addressing the physiological, nutritional, and emotional dimensions of recovery.

Eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and orthorexia, are among the most complex and dangerous mental health conditions, carrying a mortality rate higher than most other psychiatric diagnoses. They are not about food or vanity. They are about control, identity, trauma, and the ways the body becomes a site for managing emotions that feel too large to bear. Holistic practitioners approach eating disorders with deep respect for this complexity, recognizing that sustainable recovery requires addressing the emotional, physiological, and relational dimensions simultaneously.

Nutritional rehabilitation is a medical priority in severe cases, but holistic care extends well beyond restoring weight or stopping behaviors. The gut microbiome is profoundly disrupted in eating disorders, and restoring microbial balance supports neurotransmitter production and emotional regulation. Hormonal disruption, bone density loss, electrolyte imbalance, and cardiovascular effects all require attention. Holistic practitioners work collaboratively with other members of the care team to address these physiological consequences while the deeper work proceeds.

Trauma-informed care, somatic therapies, and therapeutic approaches that reconnect individuals with their bodies rather than positioning the body as an adversary are central to holistic eating disorder recovery. Building a relationship with hunger and fullness cues, discovering joy in nourishment, and developing an identity separate from the eating disorder are long-term goals that holistic practitioners support with patience and presence.
